These three pink plastic starburst holiday ornaments have been hanging from a string over the built-in bar in Grandma’s basement for as long as I can remember. Whenever my family came to visit Grandma’s house, my brother and I (after playing with the Merry Milkman Game for a while) would grab a root beer and head to the basement to play bumper pool — which we had no idea how to play, but alas it was still always a good time anyway.
We’d pull up a stool at the bar during bumper pool breaks and pretend to order another beer (root beer of course) — we felt so grown up — like we were visiting an actual bar without Mom and Dad’s (or Grandma’s) supervision. While we sat at the bar, I’d look up and admire these old, worn decorations.
The paint is nearly gone, but you can tell they were a pink-ish red color originally. Two out of three have broken tips — but no matter — these long loved starburst decorations now have a new home. Not in a dark corner of the basement, but in my light and cheery den.
For now, they sit on the fireplace mantel — at home with all of the other pink in the room — instead of hanging over a bar. Maybe someday we’ll finish our basement and include a built in bar too. If we do, you can bet that I’ll hang these three old ornaments on a string over it — just like Grandma did.
