GARDEN UPDATE: SUMMER COLOR

This week’s garden update is mostly eye candy. The colors around the Retro Ranch are just so pretty right now that I couldn’t stop taking pictures!

The purple potato vine is totally trying to take over the corner garden!

However, the purple really sets off the lantana.

I just love all the different colors in this one plant!

The yellow celosia looks great…

… so does the dark red celosia!

The dusty miller really pops next to the dark leaves…

…and the blood leaf plant seems to illuminate itself in the sunlight.

The front garden is also full of color…

…especially the purple coneflowers

…and bright yellow black eyed susans.

In other news, I scored a yucca grass at the garden center’s end of season clearance sale!

It is now planted near the blue fescue grass around the base of the pole lamp.

I first noticed this type of grass because I was drooling over some very large specimens some of my neighbors have. Yucca is easy to spot when it is in bloom because a tall stem with white flowers grows out of the middle.

In other news, the pears are starting to look more like pears and less like mini potatoes!

I’m super excited because we have a fruit picker this year so we can hopefully pick the pears before they all fall into the path of my adorable husband Jim’s lawnmower.

Anyone have any good pear recipes they might want to share?

  1. Here is one of my favorite pear recipes:

    Fallen Pear Martini

    Ingredients

3/4 oz. Hendrick’s Gin (more Hendrick’s Gin drinks)
3/4 oz. Glenfiddich 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    2 oz. Pear Juice
    1/2 oz. Agave Nectar
    1 wedge Lemon

    Instructions

Combine ingredients and shake well. Strain up into a martini glass. Garnish with a slice of pear. Pears must be cut a la minute otherwise they will turn brown. an alternative, easy garnish is a lemon wheel.

    Enjoy!
